RA59: Ragbrai 2011 Day 5

Altoona IA to Grinnell IA Yet another excellent day at Ragbrai.  As has been the trend, wi-fi and especially electricity has been difficult to come by.  I’ve been trying to keep the laptop charged so I can at least write, but my phone has been dead.  No wi-fi for a couple of days either.  I could go out of my way for it (at the library for example), but there are too many other things to do. Overcast skies today kept the temperatures lower, only into the low 90s.   Starting in Altoona IA, we travelled more Iowan farm roads into

RA58: Ragbrai 2011 Day 4

Boone IA to Altoona IA Another typical great day at Ragbrai.  Morning spin with Jack away from Boone, through the little town of Luther which had practically nothing set up.  At the 22 mile mark we found Slater IA and at least there were a few breakfast options.  In fact, we had fun watching the operations of the breakfast muffin guy (an oversized knockoff of an Egg McMuffin).  The guy working the egg griddle was a maestro. Lots of little Iowan town after that, spaced fairly close together. Sheldahl, Alleman, White Oak, Elkhart…  None of them really stood out for

RA57: Ragbrai 2011 Day 3

Carroll IA to Boone IA A very typical Ragbrai day, so I’m not really sure what to post about it.  Great riding conditions AM, plenty of heat in the afternoon.  I decided not to do the “Karras loop” century option, since I’m not really seeking to add miles to this journey unless somehow warranted.  Stops in the Iowan towns of Lidderdale, Lanesboro, Churden, Paton, Pilot Mound, and our final destination here in Boone. I ate plenty of ice cream, lemonade, Sprite, water, and tried a lamb bratwurst from Greene County.   In Churden I was successful in spying an exposed outlet

RA56: Ragbrai 2011 Day 2

Atlantic IA to Carroll IA Without a word of planning, Jack found me this morning as I was dragging my bag to the Ragbrai truck.  It seems that simultaneous morning routines works whether we are camping next to each other or not. Fifteen miles to our first stop in Elk Horn IA.  It is a neat Danish community with a full sized windmill.  There was a half size tank there too – I’m not sure what that was about.   We waited a long time in the line for the Elk Horn Fire Department all-you-can-eat pancakes deal, and so watched plenty

RA55: Ragbrai 2011 Day 1

Glenwood IA to Atlantic IA The first day of Ragbrai.  I had this same problem trying to write about it last year.  How does one describe it?  You can’t – each participant’s adventure is a different one. My cold felt better this morning but my joints were achy – what can you do?  Jack and I were out of tents relatively early in order to get our gear reorganized so the Ragbrai trucks could take it as a single piece, instead of 4 panniers (accomplished through duffel bags brought by Phil).  I decided to carry my netbook and by now-beloved

RA54: Hanging in Glenwood IA

Glenwood IA Good sleep last night.  I woke up several times and caught glimpses of a starry sky, then the next time a cloudy one.  Drops fell before dawn, but not enough to cool it down much.  But the fan!  The fan!  It works great.  I’m thinking that on the 1st morning after everyone rides, I’m going to be able to sell this thing for $300.  No sale. Breakfast this morning at Tim and Jill’s Family Restaurant.  This is supposedly the best place in town for breakfast.  The place was just about full but not overflowing, and yet they acted

RA53: Seeking Cool in Glenwood

Glenwood IA Oppressive heat last night.  Oppressive.  So hot you can’t sleep.  So hot even Nyquil doesn’t work.  So hot the sweat is pouring out of you evey second, your pillow is saturated and the air mattress has about a cup smeared all over its surface (the sleeping bag never came out of the sack). I rose in the morning with about 1-1/2 hours sleep under my belt and a lovely sinus headache.   Mind you – I’m not complaining.  This is all part of the.  It’d be folly to expect to go the whole 3 months without someone getting a

RA52: Glenwood IA!

Missouri Valley IA to Glenwood IA Our room last night was sealed and pitch black, and so at 6AM I woke up and fell back to sleep.  At 7:30AM I woke up again and thought, you know, I bet it’s light outside already.  I opened the shades a crack and I heard Jack moan, “I don’t wanna.” We headed next door to a 50s diner knockoff, since we had coupons.   (Pancakes were good but too small for even an honorable mention.)  When we emerged it was already raining.  The rain and lowered temperatures were such a relief we almost welcomed

RA51: Biker Bar

Onawa IA to Missouri Valley IA A soupy night of heat in my tent, but I really slept quite well.  As we tore down and stowed our camp this morning, I marveled at how Jack and I go about it.  Some mornings there is conversation, sometimes a “good morning,” and sometimes just a nod.  But there is no longer talk of packing up or when to leave.  The sleeping bags get rolled, the mattresses deflated, the tents disassembled and stowed, and almost on cue Jack and I are simultaneously ready to roll, helmets in place and gloves fastened.  And we

RA50: Supermen

Sioux City IA to Onawa IA Super 8 continental breakfast this morning in Sioux City IA.  Uneventful except that they only had cereal as a main attraction, and they were out of spoons.  So I downed 4 bowls of raisin bran using a plastic fork.  The hardships of the road. Jack and I were actually the first out on the road today, since Gary needed to retrace back north to Sioux City to pick up a wheel he’d ordered, and Bill was lingering for a while.  Southeast on county roads K29 and then K45, we rolled through Salix IA, Sloan
